Is Income From Abroad Subject To Tax When Brought Back To Malaysia?

From January 1, 2022 to December 31, 2026, individuals resident in our country who bring in income from abroad will be taxed, but there are certain exceptions.

The first exception is if the country of origin of the income has a legal provision that says the income is exempt from tax. For example, if Ahmad works in country A and the income in country A is not taxed, then Ahmad will not be taxed when he brings the income to Malaysia.

The second exception is if income generated in country A has been taxed there. In this situation, if Ahmad brings in income that has been taxed in country A to Malaysia, Ahmad will not be taxed again in Malaysia.

However, if country A’s income has no tax exemption law, and Ahmad brings the income into Malaysia, then the income can be taxed in Malaysia.
